Fired reporter says problems began with FMLA request

When a local newspaper fired one of its veteran journalists, the people in charge may have anticipated that the reporter would use her social media skills to go public with her story. It's rather unlikely that the people at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Oregon, expected the case to garner national attention. However it has been picked up by websites including because the reason reportedly given for the termination was that the employee deleted work e-mails while on maternity leave.

Rhode Island joins California, New Jersey on paid family leave

California has led the way when it comes to mandating that employers provide paid leave for their workers for their own or a family member's illness. California was the first state in the country, in 2004, to require paid family leave under law. New Jersey followed five years later. Now, as of Jan. 1, Rhode Island has become the third state with such a program.

Feds step in, sue company that denied FMLA leave

Many employees don't understand the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and how it could impact them in the future at their place of employment. This federal act is the same for people in every state, from California to Ohio and everywhere in between.
