As the east coast continues to clean up, many employees in California and the rest of the nation are no doubt considering how they would have reacted to a natural disaster on the scale of Hurricane Sandy. One big question is whether an employer could fire workers for deciding to stay home in the face of dangerous conditions or a lack of transportation.
Usually the word "walk" in the context of a strike refers to walking off the job. In the case of a California Wal-Mart contractor's warehouse, however, employees planned a 50 mile walk from the warehouse to Los Angeles. Because these employees are not affiliated with a union, they run the risk of losing their jobs under California's "at will" employment rule.
Today Show co-host Ann Curry tearfully announced that she would no longer be part of the morning program's family on Thursday. She was reportedly one year into a 3-year contract when the network decided to buy her out amid a ratings decline. The 55-year-old newswoman was replaced by 40-year-old Savannah Guthrie who most recently was the Chief Legal Analyst.
