Do any of these discriminatory actions sound familiar?

Many people go into their chosen fields of work because they have at least some interest in the profession. You may be one of the many people who felt a passion for a particular subject or occupation and wanted to create a career of it. As a result, when you found a job in your chosen field, you likely felt excited to interview and even more excited when you landed the job.

Unfortunately, the excitement and enjoyment of your position may have only lasted a few months or a few years. You put in a lot of hard work and may have anticipated promotions, favorable duties or other benefits of being a loyal and efficient employee. However, that was not the case.

Did you face discrimination?

Though you felt like you performed your job better than others or even had seniority, you may have been passed over and dealt unfavorable hands at every turn. You may have faced any of the following actions that you considered questionable:

  • You may have faced harassment due to your gender, race, religion, age or another protected characteristic. The harassment may have involved offensive remarks, physical contact or offensive actions that others considered pranks.
  • You may have noticed that other workers received special treatment, such as no reprimanding for being late, or they received quick forgiveness for mistakes when you or other workers received harsh discipline for the same actions.
  • You may have received less favorable work or a less favorable work schedule, and these less favorable conditions always seem to land with people of a certain gender or race.
  • You may have felt that you had the necessary qualifications and experience to land an upcoming promotion only to receive a pass-over over for someone less qualified but who was male or white.

These examples are only a few of the many instances of discrimination that could take place at work. If you believe that you have faced unfair treatment due to a protected characteristic, it may be in your interests to gain information on how to address the issue. If an internal complaint does not yield the desired results, you may have reason to take legal action against your employer. An experienced California employment law attorney may be able to help explain your available options in such a scenario.
