3 important new employment laws going into effect in 2019

Employers and employees should be aware of new laws that affect workplaces across California. Here are three news laws that will go into effect in 2019:

  • Sexual harassment training (Senate Bill No. 1343): California employers with 50 or more employees are currently required to provide 2 hours of sexual harassment training and education to employees. The new bill extends that to employers with 5 or more employees. Non-supervisory employees will receive at least 1 hour of training, and supervisory employees will receive at least 2 hours of training to be completed by January 1, 2020. Employers will also be required to post fact sheets and information about sexual harassment prevention.
  • Lactation rooms (Assembly Bill No. 1976): Current laws require employers to allow time and provide a location (other than a toilet stall) for employees to pump milk for an infant child. The new law states that the location in which the pumping occurs should be a permanent location outside of a bathroom.
  • Women on corporate boards of directors (Senate Bill No. 826): The new law requires domestic general corporations or publicly-held foreign corporations to have at least one female on the board of directors. At the end of 2021, these corporations must have at least 2 females on the board of director if the company meets certain requirements.

These laws will affect thousands of California employees. When an employer violates an employment law, they can be held accountable. And when an employee is affected by a violation of the law, he or she may have legal options.
