We’ve all heard stories from friends about the strange and unfair things that have happened to them “on the job.” Maybe some odd things have happened to you as well, but it’s doubtful that anything can top the following unusual reasons for being fired that have made their way into the news in recent years.
In each of the cases that will be described below, the wronged employee decided to pursue a wrongful termination suit and, you’ll probably agree, with good reason.
Fired for needing to use an inhaler
If you suffer from asthma or a breathing problem, you know how important it is to have your inhaler on-hand at all times. That’s why this first story is so unsettling. A man working at a manufacturing plant reported to work one morning, but he forgot his much-needed inhaler. His boss refused to let him drive home three miles to retrieve it.
Without enough air in his lungs, the man tried to continue working, and then his boss told him he was working too slowly and fired him. Later, the wrongfully terminated employee sued his employer and received an award of $45,000.
Fired for pocket-dialing the boss at exactly the wrong time
A man went home from work one day and, in the privacy of his home, he started to vent to his wife about his boss. Unbeknownst to the employee, he had inadvertently pocket-dialed his boss just before the rant began. The boss continued to listen to all the horrible things the man said for about 12 minutes. The next day, the employee was fired. He responded with a wrongful termination lawsuit.
