University professor who harassed student permitted to return

A professor of counseling education at San Jose State University has been accused of sexual harassment. The university says that the man harassed one of his students by asking her to date him.

With the man's return to campus, however, the tension between students and the professor is increasing. Students are protesting his return by dropping his classes.

The initial sexual harassment allegations came in 2014. The 2014 incident, however, was not revealed until a year later, when a second incident resulted in the professor's suspension. According to the unredacted paperwork related to the professor's suspension, a woman said that the professor called her his "Arabian Princess." He also told her "not to blow up any buildings while she was here."

Some students at the University are furious about the idea that the professor has been permitted to return to the Counseling Education department. In fact, they have formed the group Students Against Sexual Harassment to protest the teacher and get him fired. At this time, it's not clear whether the teacher will be permitted to work at the university in spring 2018.

Regardless of what happens in this case, there is no reason that anyone on a university campus in California should sexually harass others, whether one is a teacher, teacher's assistant, university staff member or student. If you or a loved one is being sexually harassed at a university, you have every right to speak up and make it stop. If your complaints are not heard, you might want to consider pursuing legal action to bring an end to the harassment once and for all.
