Removing age identifiers from a resume: Is it a good idea?

Age discrimination is a reality in many workplaces. Whether intentional or not, many employers treat certain employees unfairly because of their age.

When it comes to looking for a job, is it wise for a candidate to remove age indicators from a resume or application?

Journalist Ruchika Tulshyan recently published an editorial in The Seattle Times titled “Why I’m removing all age identifiers from my resume“.

Tulshyan decided to remove her undergrad college graduation date from her resume and LinkedIn profile. Her goal was to reduce the chance that an employer would make a decision about hiring her based on her age. She believed that employers should make hiring decisions based on experience and skills – not age.

Unfortunately, age discrimination is hard to hide from and it is tough to prove. Removing dates from a resume is ultimately going to do little when dealing with an employer who already makes decisions based on age.

However, Tulshyan is shining light on an important issue. While age discrimination will probably always be an issue in American workplaces, there are important discussions happening about the topic. Awareness can go a long way in reducing age-related discrimination in the workplace.

Remember: It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee on the basis of age. This type of discrimination can occur on the job, and it may occur during the hiring process as well.
