Restaurant owner starts specific transgender work program

In California, one restaurant owner is trying to make it easier for transgender individuals to get jobs. She is trans herself, so she knows how hard it can be.

The woman first bought an El Pollo Loco location back in 1998. At the time, she simply picked it because she enjoyed the menu. She has since purchased numerous locations as business did well. She currently has six locations.

In 2012, she hired another person who was transgender. That person, thankful for the job, noted that it had been incredibly hard to land one. The owner made it a point to hire more transgender people and now estimates her workforce to be anywhere from 8 to 10 percent transgender.

She is now part of the California Transgender Workplace Project. The goal is to help people find jobs in the restaurant industry if they are transgender by specifically connecting them with other locations that are involved in the project.

The fact that this needed to be done, and that it's so hard for transgender people to find jobs, exposes potential discrimination in the workplace. On a national level, the unemployment rate that these individuals face is double what most people have to deal with. That paints a fairly clear picture, and it was part of the reason this program started.

If you think that you have been discriminated again in any way, you must know your rights. Discrimination could include not hiring you for a job, firing you from a job you have, passing you over for a promotion, and the like.
