Employers use tricks to avoid paying overtime

As an employee, you want to get paid for the work you complete. This is only natural, so you shouldn’t back away if your company attempts to withhold overtime pay.

While most employers understand the importance of following all wage laws, some break the rules as a way of saving money on overtime costs.

Here are just a few of the tricks companies often use to avoid paying overtime:

— Tell the employee that earning a salary means they are not entitled to overtime.

— Classify the worker as an independent contractor as opposed to an employee.

— Require workers to work hours off the clock, such as completing reports after they have punched out for the day.

— Give employees off-hour duties that they are not willing to pay overtime for.

— Tell the workers they need to work from home, as well as the office.

— Tell workers to hold off on clocking in, but to get started with their work.

It is a shame that some employers use tricks to avoid paying overtime, but this is common in many industries. By doing this, companies are able to save thousands of dollars per year. Unfortunately, it means that employees are not earning what they should.

As an employee, you should keep an eye out for these tricks. If you feel that you are not being paid overtime, despite the fact that you are working more than 40 hours per week, it is time to discuss the situation with the human resources department. Hopefully, you find they made a simple mistake that they are willing to rectify.
