Are you entitled to payment for not working?

It sounds like a dream come true, but many people are actually in position to be paid for not working. This depends on your job and duties, but it could be something to which you are entitled.

Based on federal laws, your company may be required to pay you for time that you are not actually working. These wages can be paid for a number of things, including but not limited to: time spent traveling for work, time that you are on call, and in some unusual cases, time when you are sleeping.

Employee wages for on-call time is a hot button topic. If you are on call or waiting for an assignment, you may be entitled to receive pay. This comes into play when employees are required to be on call at a location outside of its company's premises. In this case, employers can set restrictions, such as the following:

-- Employees must not drink alcohol.

-- Employees must stay within a certain distance, such as 15 miles, from their job location.

-- Employees are not permitted to work for another company during this time.

It may sound to good to be true, but there are times when you are entitled to payment even when you are not working. You should become familiar with these times, as there is no reason to miss out on money that you deserve to receive.

Most workers don't find themselves in this situation, but you may be different. If for any reason you believe you should be paid even when you are not working, discuss this with your employer. If the issue is not satisfactorily resolved, further legal action may be necessary.
