Police officer sues for wrongful termination

Everyone has the right to work his or her job, regardless of industry or employer, without the fear of wrongful termination. Unfortunately, this is still a problem in today's day and age. It is not uncommon for somebody to be terminated from their position for all the wrong reasons.

A former police officer in Austin, Texas, has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city, as well as the police chief. According to court documents, the suit was filed on Tuesday, Sept. 26. The police officer was fired in July for allegedly violating terms of his probation.

Records show that the man was suspended for two months last year when he allegedly stayed at a restaurant too long and disengaged the GPS system in his patrol car.

Part of his disciplinary action called for the officer to agree to a probationary period of one year, with the idea that committing another act would lead to his termination without the right to file an appeal. It is customary that officers have the chance to file an appeal if they are fired from the force.

The officer has requested an appeal by an independent examiner. He is also hoping to be reinstated to the force, while receiving salary and benefits dating back to his termination on July 30.

There are two sides to every wrongful termination story. However, anyone who feels they have been fired from their job for the wrong reason has the right to speak with their employer and file a lawsuit if they do not receive the answers they are looking for.

This wrongful termination battle between an ex police officer and the Austin Police Department is not taking place in Los Angeles, but it is a story worth keeping an eye on no matter where you live.
