What steps do I take if I've been sexually harassed at work?

If you have been sexually harassed at work, you should never feel that you have to put up with this sort of behavior. You need to realize that this is not acceptable. You need to make it clear to the other party that you are not going to stand for this.

There are steps you can take if you have been sexually harassed at work. These include:

-- Say no in a firm and clear manner. You want the other person to know that you are aware of what is going on and do not have any plans of letting it continue.

-- Make note of what happened. As soon as you are harassed, you should write down the details of the situation. This includes dates, times, what happened and any witnesses.

-- Report the harassment. If possible, tell your manager or supervisor what happened. If this is the person who harassed you, contact the HR department. You should never keep this bottled up inside.

-- Create a paper trail. You should do everything in writing, such as making a complaint, so that you have proof.

-- Review your employee handbook. This will help you better understand the process of reporting sexually harassment, and what to expect as the investigation moves forward.

These are the types of steps you should take if you have been sexually harassed at work. While nobody wants to find him or herself in this position, it could happen to you. In this case, it is time to learn your rights and take the necessary steps.
